The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Preventive Controls for Human Food rule is now final, and compliance dates for some businesses started as early as September 2016.

What does this mean for my business? Covered facilities must establish and implement a food safety system that includes an analysis of hazards and risk-based preventive controls.

Preventive controls: Requiring preventive measures at facilities that produce human food is an important step in reducing food-borne illness.

Food manufacturing facilities must verify that hazards are being controlled and take corrective action to prevent contamination. These include process, food allergen, and sanitation controls, as well as supply-chain controls and a recall plan.

Compliance Dates: Compliance dates for businesses are staggered over several years after the publication of the final rule. Most companies have 1– 3 years depending on the size of their business.

Where can I find more information? For full FSMA rules and regulations, visit www.fda.org.

Sanitation and sanitary design are common elements across all aspects of the FSMA. Dunn Electronics supplies a variety of FSMA-compliant controls to meet your company’s needs.

Schmersal sanitary-rated safety controls are engineered to resist hostile environments by incorporating stainless steel housings, including special seals that can tolerate and stand up to caustic cleaning solutions, high temperature (80c), and high pressure (1450psi).

These Schmersal products: are moisture and dust tight (IP69K); provide waterproofing protection that exceeds NEMA 4X; are designed with extra-smooth surface contours, eliminating any possible hiding places for food and other particles that might promote bacterial growth (FSMA requirement); and are able to withstand high-pressure and steam cleaning.

Baumer offers an entire line of Clean In Place products for the food manufacturing industry, providing precise cleaning process control and process safety. Where appropriate or selected by options, they are FDA compliant; fulfill the requirements of the respective 3-A Sanitary Standard; or comply with EU regulations 1935/2004, 10/2011 and 2023/2006.
